Ladybird is like an extension of Allison Jayjack’s closet.

Jayjack opened Ladybird, a women’s clothing and accessories boutique in the Short North, a year and a half ago to share her love of vintage. Her style comes shining through in the one-of-a-kind tops, dresses, shoes and jewelry, along with new lines that fit the same eclectic aesthetic.

She’s always got her eyes peeled for vintage finds for her store, herself or her home. Here, she shares some shopping advice and fashion favorites.

How do you discover what’s next?

It’s all about observing what’s on the streets, noticing the risk-takers and translating.

What blogs do you read?

For fashion: Knight Cat, My Daily Style, Am-lul, All the Pretty Birds. For home inspiration: M.A. Belle.

What’s your favorite shopping find?

It’s a toss-up between vintage YSL platforms and a vintage pieced mink jacket.

Where do you go if you need a new dress for the weekend?

If nothing from Ladybird will do, I head to Second Chance in Grandview – perfect vintage pieces, and I usually walk out with more than I plan.

Where do you go shoe shopping?

EBay or Filene’s.

Where do you shop for things for your home?

Mostly antique shops. Heritage Square Antique Mall in Reynoldsburg has amazing steals. A few little shops in downtown Powell, and Collier West for inspiration.

Who’s the most stylish person you know?

Two good friends, local lovelies Sarah Miller and Elizabeth Bean Smith. Sarah has an incredible eye for teaming the new and old, and Elizabeth is always casually chic and has mastered the art of layering.

What things do you wear or carry every day?

Burt’s Bees pomegranate lip balm and loads of jewels on my wrists. I feel naked without
them.

What shampoo did you use this morning?

Brocato

Who cuts your hair?

Katie Hafner at Salon Lofts is truly amazing, and she sells this Moroccan oil that is a dream
come true.

Playing Favorites

Jeans: Vintage Levi’s

Color to wear: Navy

Trend right now: Nautical chic

Thing in Ladybird right now: Stripes!

Designer: Too many to list – but I’m really enjoying Alexa Chung’s new line for Madewell.

Styling products: Moroccan oil, DiorShow mascara, lavender baby oil

Perfume: Hermes Elixir des Merveilles

Scent for your home: Voluspa’s Makassar Ebony & Peach

City for shopping: Cleveland, in the summer. Estate and garage sales galore.

The Short North added another boutique to its list of storefront shops when Ladybird opened its doors for the first time Saturday night.

“I’ve been around retail all my life,” said Allison Jayjack, 26, the owner and creator of Ladybird who is eager to share her sophisticated vintage style with the fashion forward of Columbus.

Jayjack’s love for fashion and all things vintage began at a young age and has inspired both the decor and the collection at Ladybird. The store is thoughtfully staged with displays, artwork and vintage books and photographs – many of which are original family prints.

After graduating from Marshall University with a degree in fashion merchandising, Jayjack, a Dublin native, spent time in New York City before joining Abercrombie, where she opened new stores in Toronto. After returning to Columbus, Jayjack worked and sold jewelry to Grandview’s Principessa.

While clothing from upscale designers such as Susana Monaco, Built By Wendy and Charlotte Ronson are a large part of Ladybird’s inventory, the heart of Ladybird is its vintage jewelry, accessories and bits of clothing.

“I have always loved vintage jewelry,” Jayjack said. “My grandmother has boxes upon boxes of it and I was always obsessed with it.”

Jayjack first started selling her redesigned vintage jewelry at parties and local boutiques, including Ivy Hill, which occupied the space before moving to St. Louis, Mo.
The boutique boasts a diverse inventory that includes Alternative Orange Label tees, BLVD signature handbags, vintage jewelry and many lines that cannot be found anywhere else in Columbus, Jayjack said.

Because items range from $15 vintage scarves to $370 For Joseph leather jackets, shopping at Ladybird can be a treat even for shoppers on a budget.
Ladybird is located at 716 N. High St., between Jeni’s Ice Creams and Rowe and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
